WI Meeting March 2023

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

We celebrated our one hundred and second birthday at our March meeting with a 70s evening. In 1971 we were but a youthful 50 years old, and our members would still be going to the beach without sunscreen; they would be moving the TV arial for better reception; they would still be using typewriters and taping songs off the radio; and, if they wanted a selfie they would go to a photobooth. They might also be surprised to find that history repeats itself, for then there was an oil crisis and a winter of discontent as there is now!

To get into the “mood” we had disco balls and some of members wore Abba costumes and platform boots. We began with a glass of Prosecco with the obligatory cherry on a cocktail stick. We ate Chicken a la King (without a hint of a herb or a smidgen of garlic) followed by black forest gateau and lemon meringue pie. And we were entertained by the wonderful Rosie Anne Page, in her Abba boots, who serenaded us with songs from the 70s while we bopped and sang with her.

There were some notable first in the 70s – the first email was sent, smallpox was finally eradicated, Erin Pizzey opened the first domestic violence shelter and lava lamps became the must have interior design item.

Why not come and have your first experience of Fairwarp WI on the second Tuesday of each month. If you are interested either just turn up at 7.15pm at Fairwarp Village Hall, or drop me, Caty, an email on catyworlockpope@icloud.com and I can give you some more details.
