WI Meeting April 2025 - Cats Protection

If you think that really all that the charity Cats Protection was just about re-homing cats you would be mistaken.  Our Cats Protection speaker at our April meeting made it clear that this was only a part of the work undertaken by this 98-year-old charity. They have a free grief support service; they, with Dogs Trust, have a fostering service for people who find themselves in domestic abuse situations; they go into schools to educate the cat owners of the future; and they neuter.

Why do they neuter?  A cat can have kittens from four months, and they can have three litters a year of, on average, six kittens.  So, one cat can produce 18 kittens per annum, and some of these kittens will also give birth – conceivably one small cat could result in 80 kittens extra in a year.  It is no wonder that all the cats re-homed from Cats Protection are neutered, and that they offer neutering vouchers to people who cannot afford to do so themselves.

To undertake all this work, Cats Protection have 34 centres, 200 satellites and 90 shops run by 1,000 employees and 3,000 volunteers.  As our members certainly learnt during the excellent talk, British cats would have a much harder time of it without this wonderful charity.
