Fairwarp Christ Church Activity Groups

Fairwarp Church Choir

The small and tuneful Christ Church choir leads our singing of hymns and psalms during the weekly sung Parish Eucharist at 9.30 am on Sundays.  For special occasions in the church year – for example the annual Carol Service on Christmas Eve at 4.00 pm – the choir is generally augmented by singers from Holy Cross, Uckfield; and other local singing groups – for example Fairwarp’s ‘The Seven’ – also contribute.   The choir repertoire is generally fairly traditional, and singing is either accompanied by the organ or is a cappella.

We are always looking out new members, male or female, of any age or ability, although being able to read music is a bonus!  Practices are fortnightly on Thursday evenings at 7.00 pm, and a local organist, Mr Geoff West, usually accompanies.  If you’d like more details, or want to discuss how to join the choir, contact Mrs Emma Lomas on 01825-760285, or email elomas84@gmail.com

The Bellringers

According to at least one visiting ringer, Fairwarp has the finest peal of bells in Sussex.  They were cast by Gillett and Johnson and were hung in 1936 when the substantial church tower was built.  The tenor weighs fifteen hundredweight, and the sound of the bells being rung is glorious.

The Bellringers meet to practice each Thursday at 7.45 pm, and regularly ring for the Sunday morning service at 9.30 am, as well as for special occasions.  New members of the group – including beginners – are always welcome, and you can find out more about the Fairwarp bells and bellringers from the Tower Captain Mr Chris Shaw on 01825-712950.

Flower Guild

Christ Church has an active and dedicated Flower Guild with about 15 members. The aim of the Guild is to provide fresh flowers every Sunday in the church throughout the year, though not usually in the reflective seasons of Advent and Lent. We also do flowers for weddings upon request and for which we charge.

We have a very successful rota (two members each week) which is issued at six monthly intervals which means that the commitment is not too great. From time to time, we hold a flower festival – the most recent being in June 2015 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta . Over that weekend we also arranged a concert with a barbecue. It was all very successful and raised a considerable sum for the church.

We are an eclectic group of ladies (though we have had male flower guild members in the past) few of whom are church goers, but we all have a love of flowers and a commitment to supporting the parish church of Fairwarp. Although some have considerable artistic talent, most of us are amateurs who just enjoy growing and using the results for the pleasure of others. However, for major festivals in the church year, such as Christmas and Easter, we can really pull out all the stops and the church is filled with a wonderful array of flowers and foliage.

If you are interested in being part of our group, we would be delighted to hear from you! Please contact Janie Hooper on 01892 664471.
